Plaza
Espanya - This plaza, with its central monumental
fountain by Josep Maria Jujol- the multitalented architect
and inestimable associate of Antonio Gaudi- marks
the gateway to the great park of Montjuïc, the
setting for the 1929 International Exhibition and
the 1992 Olympic Games. The trade fair pavilions stand
behind the two Venetian towers which flank the Avinguida
Maria Cristina, overlooked by the majestic Palau Nacional.
Montjuïc Hill has become a
key point of reference for leisure, culture and sport.
Fountains, gardens, theatres, museums, and all kinds
of sporting facilities make Montjuïc today one
of the city´s most appealing and variety-filled
attractions.
One of these main attractions is huge central Magic
Fountain which is visible from Plaza Espanya,
up avenue Reina María Cristina. During the
summer, you can see the famous Magic Fountain (La
Font Mágica) in a weekly music and light show
that illuminates the whole mountainside and the Palau
Nacional, which is located directly behind the fountains.
In the spring/summer months (May to September), shows
run in the evenings from Thursday to Sunday, 9, 9:30,
10:00, 10:30 and 11:00 PM. In the fall and winter
months (October to April), Friday and Saturday, also
evenings, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00 and 8:30 PM.
Another important part of Plaza Espanya and
Montjuïc is La Fira. Since its creation
almost one hundred years ago, Fira de Barcelona has
grown considerably to become the most important professional
and industrial trade fair organizer in the country
and one of the first five in Europe in number of events.
Of the more than seventy exhibitions organized by
Fira de Barcelona, twelve are benchmark events in
Europe and in the top five of their speciality. A
key element for the economy, the reference points
of its exhibitions are Europe, the Mediterranean area
and Latin America. Every year, Fira de Barcelona plays
host to over 30,000 exhibiting companies and has an
audience of around 3,500,000, many of them trade visitors
who represent all industrial and trade sectors.
